A Family History
We are here at the Motherhouse of the Daughters of Charity. We are connected with their history as well.
The Company of the Daughters of Charity, founded in 1633, was the collaborative masterpiece of Saint Vincent and Saint Louise. The Company has spread throughout the entire world, faithful to its origins. Then, one day in 1830 a 24 year old young woman from the Burgundy region arrived at the Seminary (novitiate) at rue du Bac…
The apparitions of the Blessed Virgin to Catherine Labouré and the distribution of the miraculous medal were followed by an amazing renewal of vocations to the Daughters of Charity as well as to the Priests of the Mission. Fervor among them became stronger.
Through the course of the years, the Company has continued its service according to the spirit of the founders: humility, simplicity and charity.
Currently, the Daughters of Charity are present on all five continents, in 91 countries, including many with extreme poverty. They number about 20,000 Sisters worldwide. In Europe, there are 13,000 Sisters, with 1,000 in France.
